How it works: The mere purpose of this site it to quickly and effectively expand the vocabulary of any individual who comes across this site. Currently there are three different methods of doing this:
1. e-Flash Cards: One of the most intuitive options. You must sign up for a FREE account to use this feature. You will be given a word at random. Think of the definition (or write it down) just as you would with a paper flash card, then flip it over. If you knew it, mark yes, if you didn't, mark no. It's that simple. The systems artificial intelligence will quiz you most heavily on the words that you dont know and provide feedback accordingly. This is a great option for repetitive practice with those tough words that you dont have perfect yet.
2. Wordbank: This is the meat of the site, its main purpose. You must also sign up for an account for this option. When you create a new account, you are given a random 10 words from the database, these words are yours to keep. (At any time you may look over your bank) Whenever you have a few minutes, you may come to the site and "Take an Exam." The exam will ask you a multiple choice question for each word in your bank. When completed, Based on your percentage of correct answers, you will be given more words to be added to your personal bank. (Currently, you need 75% in order to earn more words) The higher the percentage, the more words you will be given. You will be shown these new words along with their definitions. Additionally, at the end of the exam you will be shown all of the words that you incorrectly answered along with their correct definitions. Your exam consists of every word in your bank, and thus each time you take an exam you will see the same words (with the addition of a few new ones.) This option is best for the person who learns bext by repition, and seems to be the most successful option. (Coming soon: Filter options, and more in depth feedback on the words that you repeatedly guess incorrectly, and those that you seem to know best.)
3. The Database: You must sign up for a free account in order to access the database. By accessing the database, you are able to view a complete list of the words in the database along with their definitions separated out by their part of speech. (All definitions are kept short and to the point) This option is best for the type of person who learns best by "Reading the textbook", namely one who can retain knowledge by reading through it as needed without superfluous quizzing. (coming soon: More words for the database, the goal is 2000)
4. Random Words: You do not have to sign up for an account to use the random feature. (To use it, click the Practice with random words link above) Basically this feature picks random words from the database and continuously gives you multiple choice questions for the definition of the word. You are shown your percent accuracy. This is best for someone with a strong photographic memory, or one who does not have much time and wants a quick review. (Coming soon: Filter options for the words that are randomly selected. Easier, Harder, SAT, GRE, etc...)
Coming soon for the site as a whole:
Hangman and more game-oriented methods of learning words.
*Much love to Allan Rinard for coining "Vocabulate" and Allison Woodin for the wonderful definition!
